President Salva Kiir Mayardit has expressed deep sorrow following the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, who died peacefully on Easter Monday at the age of 88 in his Vatican residence, Casa Santa Marta.
In his message, President Kiir described the Pope as a beacon of peace, compassion, and unity, especially for the people of South Sudan.

He recalled the Pope’s historic visit to South Sudan in 2023 and his act of humility in 2019, including his dramatic knelt down when he kissed the feet of South Sudanese leaders in a call for peace.

“The Holy Father’s prayers and encouragement gave us strength to pursue peace, even through challenges,” said the President.
President Kiir urged all South Sudanese, especially Catholic faithful, to pray for the soul of Pope Francis and extend condolences to the global Christian community.
