The Warrap State Peace Tournament concluded on Saturday, August 16th, 2025, with a thrilling final match, as Twic Mayardit defeated the Tonj North Football Team (MTN) 2-1 to claim the championship title. The tournament was widely praised for promoting unity and peaceful competition.
Following the match, Wilson Wutchok Dhal, Acting President of the Tonj North Football Team, congratulated the champions.
“On behalf of the management and myself, I congratulate Twic Mayardit for winning the Warrap State Peace Tournament against MTN Team,” Dhal said in a statement.
“Both teams played very well and entertained everyone who attended.”
Dhal emphasized that the tournament’s success lay in its peaceful execution.
“The true meaning of the Peace Tournament is to begin peacefully and end peacefully, and that is exactly what we witnessed today,” he stated.
He also extended his appreciation to the Tonj North Team for their strong performance, particularly during the second half of their matches, which he described as “very exciting.”
Dhal concluded by thanking all the fans for their support and encouraged the community to continue the spirit of unity demonstrated throughout the event.
The Warrap State Peace Tournament is an annual sports event in Juba, South Sudan designed to promote social cohesion and peace-building among communities affected by inter-communal violence.
It is part of a broader “sports for peace” movement in the country, which uses soccer competition as a tool for reconciliation and unity.
