South Sudanese scholar and public administration expert Dr. Bek Dhuorjang Chol has successfully earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Administration from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China.
Dr. Chol graduated on June 24, 2026, after completing a five-year academic journey under a Chinese Government Scholarship. During the graduation ceremony, he was also recognized as an Outstanding Honorary Graduate, an achievement that reflects his academic excellence and dedication throughout his studies.
In a heartfelt thanksgiving message, Dr. Chol described the road to earning his doctorate as challenging but rewarding. He recalled beginning his PhD studies online from Juba in 2021 while balancing work responsibilities, family commitments, and a seven-hour time difference with China.
“This journey tested every fiber of my being,” he wrote, noting that financial constraints, research challenges, and publication requirements nearly forced him to quit. However, he said perseverance, faith, and support from family, friends, and mentors enabled him to reach his goal.
Dr. Chol expressed gratitude to the Government of China, the Chinese Embassy in South Sudan, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, his academic supervisor Professor Chen Zhixia, and the leadership of the University of Juba for supporting his studies.
He also paid tribute to his mother, wife, children, brothers, relatives, and friends, describing their encouragement and sacrifices as key to his success.
Looking ahead, Dr. Chol said he intends to use his training and research experience to contribute to public-sector innovation, good governance, and institutional development in South Sudan.
His achievement adds to the growing number of South Sudanese scholars pursuing advanced education abroad and returning with skills aimed at supporting national development.
